New England Webcomics Weekend Sketchbook: Lar deSouza

This week I’d like to once again get back to sharing with you the sketches I picked up at Webcomics Weekend back in February. If you are unfamiliar with Lar he is quite possibly one of the most talented and nicest creators in all of webcomics. Lar is the artist for two comics Least I Could Do which updates seven days a week in color, and Looking for Group which updates twice a week in color. To say he’s a work horse is an understatement.

In addition to his comic work Lar holds Ustreams every friday night usually starting around 7 or 8 and running just past midnight eastern time, except when he’s at conventions. You can find Lar’s Ustreams here. He also has a number of tutorials recorded so if you are looking for inspiration and it’s not yet friday you can catch up on previous ustreams. His ustreams are very interactive. He is constantly telling stories and responding to comments from those viewing in the chat rooms. If you have some spare time on a friday night I would invite you to stop by and give it a look. Lets be honest there’s nothing worth watching on TV anyway.

New England Webcomics Weekend Sketchbook: Dave Malki

While I was up at the New England Webcomics Weekend (NEWW) I was able to collect a number of sketches from a number of very talented artists. Every Friday for the next few weeks I’m going to share with you another sketch from my NEWW sketchbook.

The theme of my sketchbook was self portraits. Today’s sketch comes to us from Dave Malki who is the creative genius behind Wondermark.

Wondermark is a wonderfully original strip that updates twice a week. The best way to describe it is this is what comics from the victorian era would have looked like. Each strip is a stand alone gag so you don’t need to start from the beginning, unless you wish to do so. Give it a look you’re sure to get a good laugh.

Wondermark isn’t a traditionally drawn strip so I wasn’t sure if Dave would be up for drawing me a self portrait but he was quickly up for the challange and provided a lovely self portrait.

New England Webcomics Weekend Sketchbook: Rene Engstrom

The theme of my sketchbook was self portraits. Today’s sketch comes to us from Rene Engstrom who does the comic Anders Loves Maria.

I would recommend if you are reading Anders Loves Maria (ALM) for the first time you start at the very first strip. The story is told in the classic sense with a definitive beginning, middle, and end in mind. Rene describes ALM: “It is a story about “adulthood” in a modern age where coming-of-age seems to be completely arbitrary.”

ALM has very adult themes and is for a mature audience. The artistic medium changes throughout from vector art to beautiful watercolors. Rene is an extremely talented artist and if you are of a mature mind I would highly recommend Anders Loves Maria. Check it out now before the story comes to an end.

Webcomics Weekend has come and gone. It was a rocking good time. I met a lot of awesome new folks and was introduced to a lot of webcomics (that I should have already known about). Here are some photos of the people I met during the weekend.

Just wanted to post a quick note since I’ve been absent from the blog for a bit. I will be attending the first ever, some would say inaugural, New England Webcomics Weekend. It is being held up in Easthampton, MA from March 20-22. It’s got a fantastic line up of webcomic cartoonists. If webcomics are your thing this would be a great opportunity to meet many of the people behind your favorite comic and give you a chance to learn about many you may have never known about. I’ll be up there handing out flyers to help promote my comic, so if you are in the area stop on by… it’s free!
