Locker Room Surprise

This week I wanted to share with you another self portrait I talked a webcomic creator into doing for me. Chris Hallbeck is the creator of a comic called The Book of Biff. Updated every Monday-Friday The Book of Biff is a completely absurd and utterly ridiculous comic…in other words funny as hell. The closest thing I can compare it to is Gary Larson’s Far Side. The Book of Biff is a single panel comic featuring a single character that is always stuck in some precarious position. If Biff doesn’t leave you shaking your head at the pure craziness that goes on you obviously have misplaced your head and should go find it right now. No seriously go find it it’s important to your everyday life.

Alright it only took me a few weeks but I finally got everything back up to where it should be. I made a few changes from the previous site by updating the header and the background. The Archives button on the top works again and I’ve removed the Store button (don’t worry your not missing out on buying anything) and I updated my Friends link to the right there adding the incredibly funny UnFamous Chris Show . If in your travels you see anything else that still isn’t working properly please let me know.

It’s been a while since I shared one of these. Today’s self portrait comes from one of my favorite webcomic creators, Danielle Corsetto.

Danielle does a comic strip called Girls With Slingshots. The short answer is it is a strip about two girls, a bar and a talking cactus. The long answer is that just about nothing is out of bounds in this strip: booze, sexual orientation, language, dick and fart jokes it’s all there but done in such a way that you embrace the characters as people you could actually know. She crafts her characters in such a way that they seem very real and relatable. Her art has simplified over the course of the strip to a point where it just looks so easy but trust me it’s not. With just a few simple lines she is able to convey a great deal of emotion from her characters.

Girls with Slingshots isn’t your typical gag a day strip, it’s more like a developing storyline that is just funny because more times than not you can relate to it. Everyone I’ve ever shared this strip with has enjoyed it. Especially if you are a woman I’d recommend giving this strip a read. There’s just something about it that everyone can relate to.

Danielle tends to draw herself drinking but had a cold the day she did this for me and therefore we have cough syrup instead.

Ok kids cover your eyes. It’s almost time for school again. I was asked by one of my associates last week what she should get for her college bound niece. I raddled off a few things that I remembered needing or wanting when I was in college: clothes chest, computer, bedding, socks, underwear (you can never have enough), quarters (for laundry, or maybe a drinking game or two), pens, notebooks, etc. So that was my quick list, but I
was sure that I’d missed a lot.

I was excited, at first, to see that my store has a list of back to school items right in the Seasonal department, but it was very store specific and really leaves out a lot of the true essentials that we don’t sell. I’ve continued thinking about this and even branched out into an internet search. Success! It took me a bit but I think I found the best list out there. Over at Good House Keeping they have broken down the lists by grades, with a super extensive college list. If you’re thinking you’re not quite sure what you’re gonna need or think you might have possibly forgotten something go head on over and give it a look. And if anyone else has any suggestions feel free to post them in the reply section. Rock on.

The Surviving Retail flyer is now available for download and for you to print up and post in your store’s break room, or anywhere else you’d LEGALLY like to post it. It’s guaranteed to class up the joint. I’d like to thank everyone who participated in helping to pick out the four strips that made the final cut. I think we have a nice variety of strips that speak to what Surviving Retail is all about. Just click on the picture of the flyer below to be taken to the 8.5×11 hi-res printable version.
